Britt’s Organics started in the year of 1998, originally under the name of Britt’s Danish Delights. Rene Christiansen, a Danish pastry chef and founder of the enterprise, has gone on to establish one of Gold Coast's leading pastry companies. With over three decades of industry experience, Rene creates unique and authentic products using quality ingredients and traditional recipes. Along with Britt Christiansen, the two tapped into a market which for years had been crying out for truly organic products. On a quest to fill this niche, they began producing bakery products with a range of top quality organic ingredients and recipes.
After demand and popularity increased exponentially, the couple changed their pastry-style bakery into an organically certified production line with nutritious, flavoursome, preservative-free organic products. In 2002 their name was officially changed to "Britt’s Organic ", where the primary focus was to produce organic sourdoughs, pies, cookies and crispbreads. Since the changeover, the company has continued to grow from strength to strength and gone on to build a name for itself as one of the leaders in its industry.
Eleven years on and the family-run bakery has tripled in size and produces one of the best sourdough (and gluten-free) breads in Australia. In conjunction with our other lines of organically certified products including crisp breads, and cookies, Britt's Organic prides itself on having built a solid reputation through the help of its loyal customers and retailers.
Britt's Organic proactively believes in biodynamic farming and enthusiastically enforces a greener tomorrow using environmentally friendly practice.
Our passion is to produce wholesome foods with great nutrition that caters for the varying dietary needs of our customers. We specialise in producing products that are yeast free, dairy free, gluten free, chemical and gm free.
Our passion for bread is the heart and soul of our success. Bread making is an art form which takes months to learn but years to master. The way in which our bread is made much depends on variables such as humidity, external temperature, and quality of ingredients.
The century old technique of artisan bread making allows for a very distinctive flavour and characterizes the baker making it. Britt\'s Organic uses a very particular leaven (starter culture) which has been actively used in our breads for over 20 years, giving it a unique yet incredibly tasty profile. Our breads begin as dough that is left to very slowly ferment 12-18 hours before mixing. A longer fermentation process allows for a more developed culture, which in turns allows for that famous Britt\'s Organic taste. After the breads have been mixed and formed they are left to slowly proof to develop a bubbly texture, making it ready for baking. Once complete, the final result is a home-style sourdough with a rustic crust, dense texture and a rich, well developed flavour and smell.
Yeast facts
Our organic breads are leavened with sourdough culture. Traditional sourdough culture is a simple mix of flour and water that has been allowed to ferment in a controlled way, thus making the bread easier to digest. This process produces a diverse mix of wild organisms, predominately lacto bacteria and wild yeasts. The effects of these wild organisms in the sourdough culture is very different from that of normal yeast, as they are part of a miniature ecosystem. The difference between normal yeast and the wild yeast within a sourdough culture is similar to the difference between refined white sugar and the complex sugar within an apple.
What are non-GMO ingredients?
GMOs, genetically modified organisms, are plants, animals and other organisms whose genetic material have been altered to create specific traits. In agriculture, GMO plants have been developed to be resistant to pests, herbicides, and bad weather, to improve nutritional value, and for improved shelf life.
The long-lasting effects of GMOs on human, animal, and environmental health have not been extensively studied. There are concerns that widespread human consumption of GMOs may lead to an increase in antibiotic-resistant diseases and allergic reactions to foods modified with the gene of an allergen. Agriculturally, organic farmers worry that insects will develop a resistance to GMO crops containing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), a beneficial bacteria that traditional and organic farmers use to control pests. Without the use of Bt, organic farmers will have fewer effective options for pest control, and traditional farmers will be forced to use harmful chemical pesticides as an alternative.
At Britt\'s Organic we have chosen to use only organic non-GMO ingredients in all of our products as part of our commitment to health, the environment, smaller farmers and most importantly, you the consumer.
Organic agriculture is a carefully designed system of food production which operates internationally to written standards. It aims to grow the best food possible by understanding and working with natural processes. Good health – of the soil, plants, animals and people – is the objective.
At Britt’s Organic is BFA accredited. We strive to deliver the utmost quality ingredients and standards to allow for an even better product each and everyday. Biological Farmers Australia (BFA) is Australia’s largest representative organic body, which is nationally recognized as the leader in influencing polices and aiding in the development of the organic industry since 1988.
In order to be organically certified through BFA a strict line of food standards and procedures must be implied, consequently leading to a better product that is truly organic.
